Trade specialization pattern

This paper examines the pattern of international trade specialization in Indian manufacturing since the mid-1980s by using data on trade flows. Low-technology sectors still dominate the categories for which India exhibits the largest degree of trade specialization. Trade is driven by the differences between us and the opportunity to specialize in what we do most effectively even makes the observable differences more dramatic than the underlying differences. Critiques of Ricardo: 1. If you look at the pattern of trade, it seems to be between similars—wealthy nations trade with each other. 2. Under these circumstances, we should expect changes in specialization patterns of those countries involved. This paper examines the evolution of production and trade specialization in Mercosur countries (Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay) and Chile and evaluates its degree of persistence and the implied long-term trends.

Global Trade and Specialisation Patterns over the next 50 years This report presents descriptive evidence of specialisation trends and investigates empirically their causes and consequences, analysing the role of policies in this process. The patterns found for aggregate exports where confirmed in tests for bilateral export flows, following the suggestion of French (2017). By 2011 a pattern of deep specialisation in the world economy was established with headquarter activities mainly in Europe, the US and East Asia, and fabrication activities concentrated in China and a limited number of other emerging economies. The empirical findings show that in developing countries manufacturing exports contribute to poverty reduction. But agricultural exports have a more significant effect on poverty in low-income countries. The analysis also confirms that trade specialization reduces poverty but under specific trade specialization patterns and policy conditions.
